battle of the beautiful

This is one of the beautiful pics that have been taken in Barfleur, Normandy. It is located only 20kms north of Utah Beach, where the allied forces landed on 6th of June 1944, to free Europe. Barfleur is one of the 100 most beautiful villages in France. My grand mother, who will turn 100 in September, was born here, and was living here in June 44 (she almost got killed by a 340mm shot from the British battleship Erebus at 1130 on the 6/6/44 by the way….)

The lighthouse is Gatteville, the 2nd tallest lighthouse in France. It marks the northeastern tip of Cotentin, the French peninsula in the Channel.
The photos have been taken a few days ago. The boats are called “vaquellotes”: typical small fishing boats of the first half of the 20th century, like the one my great grand father used to have.

Many of them have been meticulously preserved. As you can see, the sea here is green when it is sunny. All in all, it shows a peaceful image of a well preserved area of Normandy, unknown to most: a kind of beautiful well kept secret…. Pictures thanks to Jerome Houyvet. Thanks to Emmanuel Pinteaux.
