this one goes to 11

Local Knowledge

this one goes to 11Outside of the San Diego Yacht Club’s well-funded, forced “Birth to Glory” machine that pumps out top notch sailors from their earliest Junior sailing, to winning regattas across the country for god and country club, the Dago sailing scene is a pitiful mish mash of forced ORC racing (thanks to the Cortez Racing Ass. for this debacle in which not only did they foist this rule on people, they also intentionally killed PHRF here as well), and half-assed one design racing (not the millionaire Etchells 22 class – that’s a whole ‘nother subject).

So when I saw that arguably one of the worst yacht clubs anywhere, the Southwestern YC, had held their poor imitation of the famous ‘frisco Three bridge Fiasco, the “Three Mark Fiasco” last weekend, I was not in the least surprised that it only had 11 boats, total.

The club is notorious for poorly run races, and a club atmosphere that is a mix of East County dullness, and hack sailor hubris, all coated with a thin film of simmering resentment for their lot in life.

Other than that, it’s fab.
