“Your days are numbered. Use them to throw open the windows of your soul to the sun.” ― Marcus Aurelius
Last week we sailed back to the Ionian after nearly thirty five years. One of the most vivid memories of our early days working on flotillas, was the friendship we were lucky enough to find in a small Taverna in Spartochori, belonging to a man named Steve. Steve was generous, reliable and almost like a father to us flotilla skippers, who were often out of our depth both metaphorically and literally!
When we finished our years working in Greece we lost contact, and so this voyage was going to be a way to reconnect and perhaps say a more sincere thank you as a sixty year old than I might have given as a twenty five year old. So while asking around the waterfront today, I was saddened to discover that Steve died two weeks ago. After delaying our return visit for three decades we missed seeing our old friend by a fortnight.
There’s a lesson there somewhere!
